But a good web campaign for a business needs to have a combination of SEO, web design, and conversion optimization.

It is also important to have a way to track what parts of their campaign have a good conversion rate. Some companies may even have success with Facebook Ads or Google Adwords, but it’s hard to know where to start.

The Downside of Hiring for SEO

It’s really hard to know just how good someone is at SEO when you are hiring that person. Even worse, SEO is a long-term process. You can’t know right off the bat if someone will deliver good results.

Even though it is difficult, there are some tips you can use to help.
One good way to find good SEO help to market your business is by using the 3 R’s:

  1. Referrals.
  2. Reviews
  3. References.

Referrals is one of the best ways to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Use networking to find contacts that are great SEOs. It works in all other aspects. If you want to find a good mechanic or hair stylist, asking around with friends is the best way to find someone you know will be trustworthy and do great work. Ask other business owners around if they know anyone who does good work with digital marketing and SEO. This way you’ll be finding someone who is proven to do good work, and is local.

Reviews. Sometimes you just can’t find a good referral. Maybe you don’t have a large social circle in business or nobody you know has anyone they would recommend. Whatever the reason, reviews are another great way to find a proven company for SEO. Google and Yelp are a good place to look up reviews for local talent. Look for positive reviews, but also read the negative. Before hiring anyone, always check out their reviews. It just might change your opinion.

References. Every application ask you for references, your SEO company should have them as well. Don’t just ask for them, use them. Keep up with those references so you know how they’re doing. Monthly reports are great so you can stay on top of what is going on. After you’ve been with a client for awhile, yearly reports should be sufficient.

The Main Advantages of SEO for Leads and Sales

It probably seems like I am completely against SEO, I’m not totally against it. I’ve shown some disadvantages, but that doesn’t mean I’m anti-SEO.

I’ve actually been practicing SEO for 11 years.

Instead of focusing on the bad, let’s look at some of the big advantages of SEO when it’s done right:

1. Cost-effective. Some SEO’s will tell you that the organic traffic is free, however that is not completely true. It can be hard work to rank for keywords that will be competitive and produce good ROI.

Between creating the content, link building, design, and creating fixes for the page, it is not free. It’s going to take a lot of time and energy if you are doing it yourself. However, it is a lot cheaper than paying $40+ a click using Adwords.

2. Targeted traffic. It’s important to be able to reach local customers who are searching for a business like yours is very important to building traffic. People used to go to the yellow pages to find local businesses. Businesses just had to put in an ad and hope that customers would find you.

Today, local businesses can make themselves more noticeable, but because of this they have a lot more responsibility to do so.

3. Brand awareness. I’m not always a fan of brand marketing, but it’s something to be aware of. Even if customers don’t choose your business when searching, they will at least know about your business because of the search. People will be more aware of your business.

Why Work with a Folsom-Local SEO Company?

Trust is huge for the relationship between and consultant and client.

It really helps build trust when working with someone face-to-face.

I think it’s important to meet once a month to make sure everything is still going according to plan. At this meeting, I like to go over a plan of action, which is why face-to-face is best. That being said, I do have a couple of out of state referrals that I meet with over the phone.

I think meeting is person is a more productive use of time. The business owner is going to know his business better, and I think working together brings forth better ideas. Coming up with ideas together can build an even better strategy to implement that can be more successful than just one idea alone.

Here’s an example.

I have a client who had his customers complete a physical disclosure form before the facilities were available to them. The owner thought it would be good idea to make it digital. I agreed, but I also added a few ideas. I used this idea to capture the customer data. Then we could export it to their email and direct mail list. The client now has 7,000 customers that are regularly mailed promotions, offers, and event notices. It has been a great success for the business.

While this example really doesn’t pertain to SEO, it is a good example of what can happen when the two of us get together and put brainstorm a plan for success.

Avoid Long Contracts

A lot of agencies and consultants require a contract before they will do business with you. I just need a handshake. I think locking in clients is not a useful part of my business. Some consultants say that it helps with cashflow to have a customer in a 6-12 month contract simply because it ensures you will have that revenue coming in. However, I think if a customer is not seeing results from you by month 3, they should reserve the right to move on and find someone who can do a good job for their company.

Look for Small Independent Companies of Individual SEO Consultants

If you were given the choice between a large SEO company versus an independent, I think it would be a way better investment to choose a independent over the big company, as long as the independent had the experience.


The independent is going to give you more attention and time for your money.

Big SEO companies almost always have big overhead costs they have to cover. On top of that, they have to pay salaries to their employees, and pay for the general upkeep that goes along with running a big company. SEO companies also like to hire SEOs with only a few years of experience, then hand them a bunch of accounts.

This makes it very difficult to deliver good results and a good price.

On the other hand, independents can give you results at a much lower price. Independents don’t usually have a large client load like big agencies do. They will have more time to give you individual attention to share their SEO expertise.

Of course, there are still a lot of brand new independent SEOs that are still very green, and may not give you the best results, so make sure you do your research.
